ALEXANDRA RIDEL CERAMIC

Everyday Objects
On the wheel or using the coil-building technique, I begin with the form: its balance, its presence. Then comes the work on the surface, through glaze, colour and gesture: painting, scratching, masking, layering.
In my colour palette, I seek to approach the tones and qualities of nature — those of water, sky and earth. I am particularly drawn to the translucent blue of ice, the shifting hues of water, which mirror the colours of the riverbed beneath or those of the sky above, whether cloud-laden or clear, as well as the ochres left behind by time. Each of these forms a fragile surface, in perpetual transformation.
This attention to materiality connects to a deeper concern: our vulnerability and the need to preserve the forms of life on which we depend.
In these objects, this concern remains subtle. It emerges through colour, material and surface, and enters our everyday lives through their function: a reminder of this extraordinary natural world, translated into everyday objects.
